The War between Israel and Gaza

Where is Israel? Locate it on a map.
It is located in the Middle East. It borders Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan. It is beside the Mediterranean Sea.

Why was Israel created?
It was established in 1948 after nearly two thousand years of Jewish dispersal, and 55 years of Zionist agitation. The United Nations Assembly voted in favor of a Partition Plan that created the State of Israel, and established there the Jews.

Where are Palestinian Territories? Locate on a map.
They are composed of 2 regions, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. They are located in the Middle East. Gaza Strip borders the Mediterranean Sea and Egypt. West Bank is between Jordan and Israel.

What is happening in Israel and Gaza?
Israel attacked Hamas targets in Gaza in response to repeated rocket fire on southern Israel.

How many Palestinians have died and how many Israelis?
900 Palestinians have died and 13 Israelis. Out of those 13, 10 have been soldiers. (Up to Monday)

What is Hamas?
Hamas is a parliamentary organization and political party which holds a majority of seats in the elective legislative council of the Palestinian National Authority. It is considered a terrorist organization by the United States. Hamas has said it considers it a religious duty to eliminate Israel.

What was the U.S. response to the attacks?
They blamed Hamas for all the violence.

What happened when Israel was declared a state in 1948?
It was invaded by armies of Arab states.

What did Israel agree to in the Oslo accords?
Israel committed to withdrawing from parts of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank and agreed that a
Palestinian Authority would be set up.

How did Hamas come to power in Gaza?
In 2006, Hamas took a majority in the Palestinian Legislative Council.

To which "old battle" does the article's headline refer?
To the conflicts that Jews and Arabs have had since the creation of Israel.

What seem to be the hopes underlying Israel's assault on Gaza?
First of all, they want to stop rocket attacks and eliminate Hama’s power in Palestine.

How would a clear Israeli victory affect the region?
It would cause countries, such as Iran, to declare common cause against Islamic militancy.

How would a clear Israeli victory affect the United States?
It would help to start restoration in US.

Why does Iran have much at stake in the outcome of the current crisis?
Iran is involved because it is in favor of Hamas and Hezbollah. If Hamas is defeated, they won’t spread its influence in the Arab world, and their plan would fail.

How likely is it that the Israeli assault will be successful?
It is probable, but history suggests the opposite.

What are some of the divisions in the Middle East that this conflict has highlighted?
There are like 2 sides: One includes the Arabs, which are Palestine, Iran and Lebanon. The other side is formed by Israel that is supported by US, Egypt, and Jordan.

What happened in Lebanon in 1982? How are the Gaza attacks similar?
Israel attacked Lebanon for affecting its northern border. They accomplished their goal, but in the meantime a new anti-Israel threat was born in form of Hezbollah.
This is similar with Gaza attacks because in both cases Israel was dealing with Arab Terrorist groups.

In what ways might the attacks on Gaza backfire?
History suggests that they may fall like they did in 1982, and also if Iran interferes, the situation will get even worse.

Why does Mr. Abbas say he will walk away from the peace talks begun by President Bush in 2007?
Because he already deeply mired in a rivalry with Hamas, could find himself further isolated from Palestinian sentiment the longer the Israeli assaults continue.

What lessons has Israel learned from Lebanon?
Israel learned to lower expectations and this time it is more prepared.

In what way is the timing of this renewed battle beneficial?
It came before the inauguration of President Obama.

How will the Obama administration be able to capitalize on the situation in Gaza?
The passionate reactions, the emotional reactions, and the hatred, will be directed at the present administration rather than the next one.

What is going on in the photograph?
It is a little boy’s funeral. There are some people gathered around him. Some children are there and they seem really sad.

Who is pictured?
Two boys, and in the background we can see the death body of another boy and other people’s bodies.

What can you learn about how the main subject in the photo is feeling from his or her facial expression?
Te boys seem to be really sad, scared, confused, terrified, and frightened about the future. There’s uncertainty in their faces.

What might this person be feeling, given what is going on in the photograph?
I think they must be very nostalgic for the boy lying there of their own country that could probably have been his friend or even his relative.

What might this person want to say to the "opposite side"?To stop war, make peace, and resolve international problems without affecting the innocent ones.
